The Silent Herder Story

Silent Herder Mineral has been used in the Rocky Mountains for over 30 years. It has become the standard for products used to control the effects of many poisonous plants found in the mountains and plains of the west. It has also been used to reduce the problems associated with frothy bloat thereby allowing ranchers the ability to utilize pastures to the greatest extent.

Silent Herder was developed by Eric Anderson of Bozeman, Montana, when, after numerous cases of bloat on his ranch, he noticed that the deer that grazed next to his cattle did not bloat unless they ate the salt he put out for his cows. He reasoned that since they were ruminate animals like cattle and sheep they must be receiving protection from natural salt licks in the surrounding mountains. Eric sampled a natural salt lick and after several trials discovered that it contained a special form of calcium and magnesium. This type of calcium is obtained through a patented process and is trademarked under the name Dycedol. Eric also noticed that deer and elk did not suffer any ill effects when they ate many the poisonous plants found in the mountains and high plains of the west.

After many years of research, he discovered that the same combination of ingredients in Silent Herder would reduce the effects of those poisons on cattle and sheep. To this mix of calcium and magnesium he added mono sodium phosphate, trace mineral salt bran, and molasses to make Silent Herder Mineral Mix.

That formula is still being sold as Silent Herder "The Legend." We also offer 2 other formulations - Silent Herder Plus TM- and Silent Herder Alka-Lick. Silent Herder Plus TM has the added trace minerals copper, zinc, manganese, iodine, cobalt, and selenium. Silent Herder Alka-Lick is used as a mixing agent when consumption is reduced due the high content of salt and minerals in drinking water or soils. These products are available in the western United States and Canada. They are manufactured in Montana under the strict quality control of a major feed manufacturer.
